Advent Series: Angels Among Us
“Do not be afraid…”
– pretty much every Angel in the Bible
Some messages are complex and nuanced, but these days, the messages that travel fastest and “go viral” are concise ideas in social media, often with their topic-labels known as hashtags (words preceded by #). The angels that appear in the story of Jesus’ birth would have been very comfortable in our world of tweets and hashtags. Their messages were often short and to the point– their favorite line being #DoNotBeAfraid. As we look at the stories of these winged messengers to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and the Shepherds, and as we explore their reactions to such messages and messengers, we will contemplate what messages we can offer that will counteract a culture of fear and “re-tweet” the angelic news that we need not be afraid. In doing so, we find that we, too, are messengers of God. This Advent, join us as we bring #morehope, #morepeace, #morejoy, and #morelove to the world.
