Sermon: Look Up!

“Look Up!”

(June 26, 2011) In this incredibly challenging passage, Abraham follows what he believes are God’s instructions and prepares to sacrifice his son. At the last moment, however, he looks up and sees another way that God is providing for him. Where are the places where we are called to widen our vision, to look away from the violence in front of us, or the legalism that so often constricts us, and look up to see what God is doing? (Genesis 22:1-14)

In this sermon I also discussed the sentencing in the trial of Rev. Amy DeLong, and voiced hope that the “penalty” of collaborating with others to imagine healing for the clergy covenant might represent a shift from punitive justice to restorative justice, a “looking up” toward a new way of living together in our brokenness.
