(May 22, 2011) We think we know and understand this very familiar passage from the Gospel of John, but like so many things that we think are in the Bible, we overlay our own expectations on what we read, and let our brains fill in the rest. This sort of assumption, however, means we understand the Bible and the world less, not more, and has the potential to open up all sorts of problems (like predicting the Rapture…). Instead, we need to come to the Bible, yes even to this familiar verse, with open minds and listen for what God might be saying to us. (John 14:1-14)
I make reference to a Gestalt image in the sermon, and I showed this example on the screen during the sermon (I also referenced a Far Side Cartoon, found here).
